Within the Division of Student Affairs, I serve as the Associate Vice President for Student Life. I am excited to take on this new role which includes Campus Recreation, the Chamberlain Student Center & Campus Activities, and Orientation & Student Leadership Programs. I also serve as an advisor to the Student Government Association and assist in providing student organization services, such as managing .
I most enjoy working with the talented student leaders within these areas and our dedicated and skilled graduate and professional staffs. We are fortunate to have a rare period of a nearly full staff, which is uncommon in such a large unit. We only have one professional vacancy within Student Life in SGA since Katherine Kealey was recently promoted from Assistant Director/SGA advisor to Director, OSLP.
This is a busy but exciting time for us with many student staff teams and student organizations celebrating the end of the academic year. One highlight for me was the Unified Sports club sport year-end banquet in which they reviewed their many accomplishments on and off the soccer field and basketball court. As you may remember, Unified Sports received the ESPN/Special Olympics Top 5 National Banner School recognition for inclusivity, the only university receiving that honor. The club leaders and partners truly live unified and play unified.
Within our departments, Campus Recreation hosted another successful Health and Wellness Expo, and our well-being committee is planning a site visit to George Mason University early this summer to learn more about their campus well-being efforts. In SCCA, we look forward to our large annual , and we will be updating the Eynon Ballroom this May. Make sure to check out the new finishings later this summer! OSLP is (as always) preparing for orientation, but we also celebrated Greek Week (April 15-19), and recently held the 9th annual Leadership Summit and Celebrating Leadership Awards.
The main focus of the Student Life units is to provide quality facilities, programs, and services for students. The Directors, staff, and graduate coordinators are always assessing our current practices and thinking of improvements in these areas. We study best practices at peer institutions, attend & present at conferences, and research new ideas regularly. Here are some articles I’ve read recently that touch on the important work we are doing with students across the Division (please click the links below to check them out!):
