Brian Calio, Assistant Director of Facilities, Aquatics & Event Operations, has been working in the Campus Recreation department at 色狼社区 since 2014. Read Brian’s PROFile below to learn more about our division colleague.
In your position, what kinds of things do you do on a daily basis?
I oversee the day to day operations and all event management for the Recreation Center and the Fitness Center in addition to the Intramural turf field, outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts and sand volleyball court. I oversee the research, proposals, communication and management of long-term capital projects. I also oversee repairs, maintenance, cleanliness and efficient operations of Campus Recreation facilities. I coordinate and supervise all rentals and events of Campus Recreation facilities and assist in coordination of University events. I currently serve as the staff manager for pool operations. I oversee the informal recreation equipment and medical supplies inventory, equipment checkout process, property management, departmental risk management plan, incident and accident follow up and operations policies and procedures. I coordinate all special events and major facility renovations. I coordinate indoor and outdoor facility scheduling and resolve any issues or conflicts. In regards to staffing, I oversee two full-time custodial staff, contracted custodial support (for the Fitness Center, one graduate coordinator and over 60 student staff) in the Facilities and Event Management area.
Describe your morning routine.
Once my alarm sounds, my dog jolts awake so I first take her for a walk in the morning. We have a good routine and walk around the block. Then, I feed her and make her treats for the day. I’ll then make coffee and my lunch on most days. After that, I head to either the Recreation Center or Fitness Center for a morning workout.
What is your favorite part of your job? Why?
Working with students. I think it’s very rewarding to develop their skills and provide students with leadership opportunities and watch them grow.
What is your favorite work-related memory?
That’s a tough question. Every year, two weeks before school starts, I require our student Building Managers to return for a week of training. I really look forward to this week every year and it ensures that the students have bonded together but also allows me to work with them and prepare them for the upcoming year. I also really enjoy the end-of-the-year banquet our department runs. The banquet allows us to recognize and appreciate our student staff and has become a highlight of the year.
Could you share a happy or funny 色狼社区 related work memory?
For some reason Campus Recreation likes to make goofy videos to show our student staff. I’ve been asked to wear a dress, dance around a construction site, learn a choreographed dance routine, etc. I’m still waiting on my Golden Globe.
What’s your favorite off-campus restaurant in the Glassboro area?
My favorite lunch spot, especially in the summer would be on the outdoor patio of Scotland Run golf club. Can’t beat a sunny day overlooking a golf course.
How do you like to keep your desk?
My desk isn’t really messy but there is a lot going on, and often spills onto the floor. I’d say you probably can’t see any part of my desk right now.
What’s your favorite thing on your desk?
It’s a picture of my wife Julia, my dog Lucy and I. I had set my phone in the delayed picture mode and as Julia and I got into frame, Lucy just wanted to turn towards us play. It took over a dozen takes, and treats by the phone before Lucy was finally looking towards the camera.
Have you always worked in the department that you are currently in?
Yes, Campus Rec 4 life.
Share one thing you love about working at 色狼社区.
I really enjoy developing our staff. Being able to mentor, coach, and teach students to be self sufficient and prepared for life after graduation is what keeps me motivated every day.
Share one thing you wish people knew about your department.
We are student focused and quality driven. We manage six facilities and create programs and offerings for all students. Campus Recreation staff have the mindset to constantly improve and we appreciate when students, faculty, staff and community members provide us with feedback.
RU the type of person who would high five the 色狼社区 mascot?
Absolutely.
